Learning the Difference between the Spirit & the Soul

The spirit and soul are not the same.  The spirit is our inward man, the one who is perfect and renewed by the word of God upon being born again.   The soul is the part that connects our spirit, soul and body.   We must meditate on the word of God, edify ourselves (soul) by praying in tongues and crucify the flesh in order to renew our mind (soul) so that come into alignment with our spirit man, the perfect man.

Romans 8:14  For those who are led by the Spirit of God are the children of God.

We see here that we contact God in our spirit. 

Romans 8:16  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children.

Galatians 5:16   So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh.

We see from scripture that if we are going to be led, we must be spirit led: 

If we are not spirit led, we will be body ruled. 

If you are not walking in the spirit, then you are walking in the flesh.  There is no neutral. 

We must be spirit conscious and not flesh ruled. 

                        You cannot just subside in the spirit and allow the flesh to have its way.  You must be conscious of your walk and choose to walk in the spirit or you will revert back to your old way of thinking, which is to walk in the flesh.   Hebrews 4:12

                        With your body you contact the physical realm, with your spirit you contact the spiritual realm and, with your soul, you contact the intellectual or the soulish realm which consists of the mind, the will and the emotions. 

Ecclesiastes 1:16  I communed with my heart, saying, “Look, I have attained greatness, and have gained more wisdom than all who were before me in Jerusalem. My heart has understood great wisdom and knowledge. 

John 7:37-39 —  Shows us the result of living in the Holy Spirit. Out of our heart (the innermost being/spirit man) will flow rivers of living water, the indwelling spirit of GOD flows in us and through us. 

As a result of receiving the Holy Spirit, Jesus said out of the inward parts of the belly will flow rivers of living water.  There is a spiritual river on the inside of us ready to flow.  Don’t clog the flow!  Also see, Proverbs 20:27 –  searching all the inward parts of the belly

All the leadings come from out of your spirit and most of the time it happens during prayer in other tongues.   Because while praying in tongues you are conscious of the leadings of the inward man.  Your spirit is active while you are praying in tongues.  God leads His children by the inward witness/holy spirit. 

Ephesians 3:16 I pray that out of his glorious riches he may strengthen you with power through his Spirit in your inner being – when you pray in tongues you are building an edifice of strength on the inside of you. 

Romans 12:1-2 . . .  offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. . . . but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

1 Cor. 9:27 – Paul encourages us to discipline our bodies, to crucify our body and bring it under the subjection of our spirit man. 

Crucifying your flesh means to present your body as a living sacrifice by crucifying your flesh.  Crucifying the flesh is not something that God does for us, but something that we must do for ourselves. 

If we are going to allow the inward man to dominate us, we must keep our body in subjection to the spirit man instead of letting our body dominate our spirit man.  We are the ones who must present our body as a living sacrifice and put our body under the subjection of the inward/spirit man.  We must not be conformed, but transformed by the renewing of our minds. 

James 1:21   Therefore, get rid of all moral filth and the evil that is so prevalent and humbly accept the word planted in you, which can save you.

Get the word planted in you so that it can save you! 

Psalms 23:3   . . . he restoreth my soul.

The Hebrew word translated RESTORE in the Old Testament and the Greek word translated RENEW in the New Testament mean the same thing: i.e., the soul/the mind is to be renewed /restored. 

We must not be conformed but transformed by the renewing of our minds.  Subject your body and transform by the renewing of your mind.   These are the steps that you must take in order to ensure that you are being led by the spirit of God. 

            God is always leading and speaking to us, but, we are the ones who have to take these steps to ensure that we are hearing his voice and being led by the spirit.
